Eastern India is home to the Indian state of Odisha. By area, it is the eighth-largest state, and by population, it is the eleventh-largest. The number of scheduled tribes in the state is the third highest in all of India.
In the north, it borders the states of West Bengal and Jharkhand, in the west, Chhattisgarh, and in the south, Andhra Pradesh. The Bay of Bengal borders Odisha’s 485 km (301 mi) of coastline.
There is a network of highways, railroads, airports, and seaports throughout Odisha. With the rest of India, Bhubaneswar is well connected via air, rail, and road. Four additional lanes are being added to some highways.

A 30 km metro rail route between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack has also been planned. There are two operating airports, 17 airstrips, and 16 helipads in Odisha. In May 2018, Jharsuguda’s airport received an upgrade to become a full-fledged domestic airport.
In an effort to increase intrastate and interstate civil aviation, the government of Odisha is also planning five greenfield airports at Angul, Dhamra, Kalinganagar, Paradeep, and Rayagada. Additionally, upgraded aerodromes at Barbil, Gopalpur, Jharsuguda, and Rourkela were planned.
